Self-guided walking tour - Fortified castles trail in Alsace

From the North to the South of Alsace, explore the remains of Middle-Ages’ castles and fortress. From the forest enjoy beautiful panoramas on farming landscapes and on the plains of Alsace.

You will discover with this trails the diversity of Alsace and its cute, quiet villages. Your tour starts in Saverne and ends in Barr, little town in heart of the Alsatian vineyard and its Grand Cru.

Day 1

Arrival in Saverne
Enjoy the charms of Saverne and its surroundings. A very attractive town rich with a beautiful architecture.

Day 2

Saverne – Wangenbourg approx. 18 km (+942m/-673m)
From Saverne, beautiful capital of the Northern Vosges, you walk up to the castle of Haut-Barr and follow the crest of the Vosges from castle to castle until Wangenbourg. An attractive view on the valley of the Rhine, on Strasbourg and when clear weather on the Black Forest awaits you.

Day 3

Wangenbourg- Oberhaslach approx. 15 km (+629m/-806m)
First you will climb to Schneeberg (961m), then you will come down again in the valley of Oberhaslach by the waterfall ‘’du Nideck’’.

Day 4

Oberhaslach – Klingenthal / Ottrott approx. 22 km (+880m/-877m)
The GR5, after Urmatt, you cross the valley of Brüch and pass near Grendelbruch. Passing through “Purpurkopf” (570m) and “Heidenkopf” (787m), you reach Ottrott.

Day 5

Klingenthal / Ottrott – Le Hohwald approx. 14 km (+662m/-372m)
Visit the famous abbey of Ste Odile and the numerous castles protecting it since the 12th century, such as the Kagenfels and the Birkenfels. The GR5 leads you towards the Kienberg (775m) at the entrance of Hohwald.

Day 6

Le Hohwald – Barr approx. 17 km (+492m/-849m)
Go down to the vineyard by the castles of Andlau, the village of Andlau and its Romanesque abbatial Ste Richarde, and by the Zotzenberg and Mittelbergheim.
